Facts About the Quapaw Nation:

  • For a short time, beginning in 1824, the Quapaw lived amongst the Caddo in Texas along the Red River.
  • Pollution of Quapaw lands from lead and zinc mining is represented by the Tar Creek Superfund site.
  • Arkansas, both the state and the river of today, is one of the names used to refer to the Quapaw.
  • The Quapaw are a Dhegihan‑Siouan speaking people as are the Omaha, Kaw, Ponca, and Osage.
  • The Quapaw voted to allot land to themselves before the government did so, leaving no “surplus land” to sell.
