Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma

About The Choctaw Nation

Facts About the Choctaw Nation:

  • The Choctaw from the Southeast arrived in Indian Territory in three waves between 1820 and 1833.
  • The three district names in their homeland were used in their new reservation: Moshulatubbee, Pushmataha, and Apukshunnubbee.
  • The Chickasaw were temporarily allowed to live in the western portion of the Choctaw Reservation.
  • The Choctaw valued education for women and established three female seminaries on their reservation.
  • Like their Chickasaw neighbors, the Choctaw Nation formally allied with the secessionist South in 1861.
