About The Seneca-Cayuga Nation

Facts About the Seneca‑Cayuga Tribe Of Oklahoma:

  • In 1817, the US government established two reservations in Ohio for northeastern US tribes such as the Seneca, Cayuga, Erie, Conestoga, and Shawnee.
  • In Indian Territory the Seneca welcomed the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, and additional Seneca from New York and Canada.
  • Their removal from Ohio to Indian Territory lasted eight months with numerous hardships and delays.
  • Upon arrival to Indian Territory in 1881, Indian Agency records do not list the Cayuga as a separate tribe.
  • In government documents, the Cayuga are simply listed as part of the “New York Indians.”
