  • The Ottawa Tribe lost their federally recognized tribal status and regained it between 1907 and 1978.
  • Former chief Charles Red Cedar was a decorated combat veteran from the Korean War.
  • Ottawa comes from the name Adaawe meaning “to trade.”
  • In 1831 the Ottawa were relocated from the Great Lakes region to Kansas and eventually to Indian Territory in 1867.
  • In early Ottawa history tribal leaders signed documents, such as the Treaty of Greenville, with a symbol for their clan.
