Facts About the Modoc Tribe Of Oklahoma:

  • The Modoc in Oklahoma are descendants of Captain Jack’s band of Modoc who fought in the Modoc War.
  • Captain Jack was tried by a U.S. Army War Tribunal and executed by hanging in October 1873.
  • The famous Oregon Trail passed through the Modoc homeland along the modern California‑Oregon border.
  • In 1873, 153 Modoc were transported by wagon and train under armed guards to a reservation in Indian Territory.
  • The first marked grave at Modoc Cemetery, dating to 1874, belongs to Captain Jack’s daughter.
  • Of the 101 adult Modoc transported to Indian Territory in 1873, only 68 adults remained to receive allotments in 1891.
