Facts About the Comanche Nation:

  • Known as fierce warriors and skilled horsemen, they are historically referenced as “Lords of the Plains.”
  • Both girls and boys learned to ride horses early in their childhood.
  • At the height of their influence on the Southern Plains, the Comanche language was employed and understood by surrounding Indians and non‑Indians (lingua franca).
  • There are two Comanche language dictionaries in print.
  • The Comanche had a reservation in Texas between 1854 and 1859 before finally being removed to an Oklahoma reservation in 1867.
  • The Comanche are one of many Uto‑Aztecan‑speaking Native American groups.
